A TOWN councillor has stepped down from Llandrindod Wells Town Council in order to fight against proposed car park charges.

Chris Carmichael officially resigned at the council’s meeting on February 21.

Mr Carmichael lives near one of the car parks on Tremont Road and at the Ridgebourne, so he could not be involved in discussions due to a personal interest.

He said: “Because I live where one of the car parks is, and I could potentially use it, which I haven’t done, it was determined that I have an interest.

“So it meant I wasn’t able to get involved with residents fighting Powys in charging on a car park.”

A committee on the town council considered paying the county council to lease the car park, avoiding the parking charges.

“For a number of reasons the town council decided they weren’t going to do that. I was disappointed but I understand it was a committee decision,” added Mr Carmichael.

“So I am resigning in order to get something done, which is a bit absurd. I was told if I continue as a councillor and fight this, a member of the public could go to the ombudsman.”

Mr Carmichael is a member of Radnor Green Party and was an assembly member candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire in the 2016 elections.

He joined the town council in October 2014.

He said: “I have enjoyed my time on the council. We hear so many things on the council.

“It is an experience that is well worth having. You are not going to agree all of the time. It can get feisty. I feel like we are doing something to help the community. You can do that as a resident.”
