GUILSFIELD allowed the Welsh Cup occasion pass them by according to boss Danny Barton after their 3-0 defeat to Dafabet Welsh Premier side Bala Town.

The Lakesiders eased to victory at Clos Mytton where the hosts never threatened a repeat of last month’s fourth round shock against Cardiff Metropolitan.

Manager Barton insisted his players would have regrets after their performance as Bala Town booked a semi-final date with Caernarfon Town next month.

He said: “It was a bridge too far, and we didn’t turn up to be honest.

“They deserved it, but our attacking play wasn’t good enough,” said Barton. “ I’m proud of the lads to get this far, but we asked them to have no regrets and I think they left a bit out on the pitch.”

The Lakesiders dominated the early proceedings and saw a corner come back off the upright in the early stages as the strong wind disrupted both sides.

On the quarter hour mark a Gareth Jones corner caused a mass scramble in the Bala box while Dave Littleford had to be smart to deny top marksman Mike Hayes at the other end.

Kieran Smith was the lively spark for Bala, who took the lead shortly before half time as a corner fell to Ryan Wade who hammered home.

Robbie James saw a tame header gathered by Ashley Morris early in the second before with Chris Cathrall having a free kick blocked as the Guils sought a response.

On 69 minutes Jake Cook squandered Guilsfield’s best chance when he flicked a Cathrall free kick over and the villagers were soon punished.

Just a minute later Chris Venables was on the spot to hammer home a knock down from inside the area following good work between Wade and Smith.

Bala wrapped up victory when Jordan Evans broke and ran the length of the pitch before squaring for Wade who miscued but John Irving was not to be denied as he tapped into a gaping net.
