A HOTEL which began life back in the 18th century has been sold to an independent coaching inns operator.

Bulldog Hotel Group, which has a host of hotels across the UK, has acquired the prestigious Royal Oak Hotel in Welshpool from Emma and Malcolm Bebb.

The couple are part of an elite group of three previous owners and Malcolm believes it is time to move on after 10 memorable years in charge.

He said: “The Royal Oak has an amazing heritage in Welshpool and the past 10 years have been no exception, with the hotel hosting many memorable occasions, from the recent Government Public inquiry for wind farms, to the all time high of having HM Queen and Prince Philip for lunch.

“However after 10 years, we decided to sell the hotel in order to expand our existing farming businesses.”

The grade two listed building was the former manor house of the Earl of Powis until 1927.

Malcolm expressed his thanks to everyone who has supported them at the hotel over the years.

He said: “We would like to thank all our loyal staff and customers for their dedicated custom and service over the past 10 years and wish Bulldog Hotel Group ongoing success in Welshpool.”

Founder and managing director of the hotel group, Kevin Charity, has pledged to invest money in all areas of the hotel.

He said: “We’re delighted to have acquired the Royal Oak; it is a real gem of a hotel, acting as a hub for visitors and local residents for centuries.

“We will be investing in all areas of the hotel, including completing the bedroom refurbishments started by the previous owners and working with the team to develop the food and drink offering, which we see as a real opportunity.”
