VETERAN entertainer Martin Barry is on a mission to make sure the sacrifice of the First World War is not forgotten.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the 'war to end all wars' he is staging a show called 'Time to Remember' at Welshpool Town Hall on Friday, November 9, before touring other venues up and down the country.

Martin, who has written and directed the production, also takes a lead role himself as the story unfolds from the declaration of war to the armistice.

“It's a night of patriotism, nostalgia and remembrance with songs from the time that were written to rally the troops as they marched off to war,” he said. “The show has a poignant message, of course, but it's also a great night out.”

There's a touch of music hall and comedy too because it was British grit and community spirit that helped ease the constant anguish at home over loved ones risking their lives for king and country.

Dressed in authentic costumes and uniforms of the period the cast of eight including a young recruit, who was among many to lie about their age to get the Front, recreate the atmosphere of patriotism at home and the horror of the trenches as 'our boys' faced the enemy on foreign soil.

The show reflects all aspects of life during those dark days and the joy of armistice when it was all over, but throughout the message is one of remembrance and gratitude for all those who didn't come home.

Tickets to see 'Time to Remember' at Welshpool Town Hall at 7.30pm on Friday November 9 cost £6 by advance booking at The Tourist Information Centre in Welshpool or at £7 pay at the door.
