RESIDENTS across Flintshire and Wrexham are being asked to nominate their 'every day saint'.

A previous winner of the St David Award is encouraging others to nominate stand-out individuals for the 2019 award.

Pete Fuller, of Mold, previously won the bravery category in 2016 after he was nominated for saving a life by selflessly intervening in a machete racial attack in his local Tesco.

He saved the life of a man who was being attacked by a machete and hammer by distracting the attacker and using his previous army training to restrain him and remove his weapons.

He said: "My option was to stand up and try to save a guy’s life or to stand aside and let someone die horribly in front of me.

"When I found out I was nominated for the bravery award I was shocked and amazingly proud my actions were being recognised. With the recognition I received from the awards, I have been able to do talks and fight for equality, understanding, reason and benefits of diversity.

"These award are shining a light on every corner of our great country and showing the amazing things being done by people of all ages and backgrounds within our communities.

"Being part of the St David Awards has made a huge impact on my life and I strongly encourage people to nominate someone for the awards."

Launched by the Welsh Government, the St David Awards are the national awards for Wales and the categories include bravery, citizenship, culture, enterprise, innovation science and technology, international, sport and young person (up to 19 years old).

The final category is the First Minister of Wales' special award - chosen by the First Minister himself.

Welsh Government launched the #EverydaySaint campaign to highlight that anyone can be put forward for an award provided they have made a significant contribution to Wales.

Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, said: "These awards are about highlighting and celebrating the amazing people in this country that go the extra mile to make a difference to their community. Hopefully our #EverydaySaint campaign will encourage people to enter those whose efforts need recognising."

Nominations are now open and people can enter via an online form on the St David Awards website which close at midnight October 16.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 21 2019 and anyone can be nominated in or outside of Wales, providing they have a meaningful link to the country.
