A WREXHAM woman who failed to send her child to school regularly was told by a judge that the attendance record was “totally and utterly dire.”

The woman, aged 36, admitted a Wrexham County Borough Council charge after the boy only had a 50.79 per cent attendance record between April and July this year.

Judge Gwyn Jones, sitting at North East Wales Magistrates’ Court at Mold, said that the child had only spent half the time in school, the remainder being unauthorised absences.

But he took into account that since that time there had been a 100 per cent record.

She was fined £150 with £200 costs and a £30 surcharge.

Alun Williams, defending, said that the defendant had other children and all the others attended school regularly.

It was accepted that there had been issues involving the attendance of her particular son who was aged 13 and 14 at the time of the offence.

Family were now helping her to ensure the boy went to school and he was pleased to report that there had been huge improvements with a 100 per cent record.

The judge made an order that the child should not be publicly identified.
