AN Anglesey man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a vulnerable woman.

Lindsay Maher gained the trust of his victim and assaulted her at her Anglesey bungalow. Maher was found guilty of raping the woman, who requires the assistance of a support worker, but the jury cleared him of another rape charge.

They also found him guilty of four charges of assault by penetration, attempted rape and attempting assault by penetration with all the offences committed between January 1, 2014 and April 4 last year.

Mold Crown Court heard that Maher frequented the woman’s home and undertook chores for her, including moving a carpet and doing her shopping. Prosecuting barrister Anna Pope: “Having gained her trust he abused it by carrying out his own sexual fantasies on her.”

She told her support worker about injuries she sustained in the sex attacks, although initially said she didn’t want to report Maher to the police. But in April last year she confided with her GP and Maher was arrested. He claimed the sexual relationship had been “entirely with her consent” and he denied all the charges.

Maher, 53, of Bro’r Ysgol, Bodedern was remanded in custody for a pre-sentence report to be prepared before sentencing at Mold Crown Court on October 26.
