A COUNCILLOR has been moved to pay a debt of gratitude and thanks to a team of women who knitted a moving WW1 memorial.

The cascade of more than 3,000 poppies falling down from a window of St Tydfil’s Church, Coedpoeth, was hand knitted by a core team of four volunteers, Helen Huxley, Linda Jones, Ceryn Roberts and Suzette Coull.

John Edwards, who is the chair of the neighbouring Minera Community Council, said he was really thankful to the ladies for all their hard work and wanted to take the time to thank them publicly for all their efforts.

He said: “The girls all worked so hard on this piece of artwork and they deserve several pats on the back for their efforts.

“I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say, thank you, your efforts are thoroughly appreciated.”

Mr Edwards, who is himself a veteran, went on to say that many visitors had already been to the church to see the weeping window and how proud he was that such a unique tribute was on display on the church.

“I think it looks fantastic and is a really impressive tribute to all those who lost their lives.”
