Llandrindod Well’s lake was completely lit up on Saturday night, September 15, as over 700 candlelit glass jars lined the water.

Attendees walked around the lake, enjoying the spectacle, and made donations to the British Heart Foundation: the charity the event was held in aid of.

“It was quite something, it was absolutely amazing,” said Jayne Griffiths, the ‘Community Champion’ for Tesco in Llandrindod Wells - the woman behind the brand new fundraising idea.

“We wanted to do something. My aim in life is to bring Tesco and the community together. And I wanted to make it different than just bucket collecting around the lake,” she said.

Jayne’s manager encouraged her to go for the idea, which she came up with together the town’s mayor, Cllr Jon Williams.

Around 200 people attended the candlelit walk around the lake and over £400 was raised on the night.

Jayne said: “What I wanted in my head was going to be good but what actually happened was amazing.

“It was so lovely, really really lovely.

“The few months’ work has been well worth it.”

The lake was lined with 720 glass jars, which Jayne individually placed hundreds of tea lights in.

She took to social media to gather the jars, hoping for around 200, and getting far more than she ever expected.

“I just put it on Facebook and people were so kind and generous,” she said.

Jayne’s fundraising for the British Heart Foundation consisted of more than just the candlelit lake walk, she fundraised across a four day period and managed to raise a total of £1,200 for the charity.

Other forms of fundraising included setting up a stall with British Heart Foundation nurses in the Tesco supermarket and informing the shoppers of the work the charity does.

Some of the money will be spent locally, going to nurses such as Julie Havard-Evans (pictured), a cardiac nurse specialist for the British Heart Foundation; in funding new equipment to monitor blood pressure in Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Knighton, Rhayader and Presteigne.

The British Heart Foundation is one of the three charities Tesco is fundraising for this year, and one of the three Jayne is responsible for coming up with creative fundraising ideas for.

Back in May, the County Times reported on how Llandrindod Wells turned pink for the charity Breast Cancer UK, where 22 shops had pink window displays; another one of Jayne’s inventive ideas to raise cash for charity.
