A COMMUNITY has gathered to help a town stage one of Europe’s largest youth festivals.

With the Urdd Eisteddfod set to be held in Denbigh in two years' time, the Denbigh Urdd Appeal Committee will stage an auction of promises as part of its campaign to raise funds for the town’s Urdd fundraising target of £315,000.

The Urdd Eisteddfod, the annual celebration of the Welsh language and culture, takes place in a different location every year and is set for Kilford Farm on the outskirts of Denbigh in 2020.

A total of 30 committees in regions across Wales have been assigned with fundraising targets by Urdd to contribute towards the overall cost of the festival, which is expected to reach £1.8 million.

Over 70 items will be on auction at the Denbigh event, held at the Brookhouse Mill on Friday, September 28, with a vast number of donations from businesses and groups in the town.

The items include a planter from Denbigh Youth Shedz, a Denbigh FC season ticket, two breakfasts at Catherine’s Kitchen, a First Aid Course by Dream Safety, a chocolate hamper from Denbigh Chocolate Shop, and a £30 voucher from Visage Beauty Salon.

A spokesperson for the committee said: "The committee have been overwhelmed with the response that we have received.

"Businesses near and far have been very supportive in giving us items that we can sell and we are still getting more items to auction as people are getting more aware of the auction.

"We now need people to attend the night to bid on all the wonderful goods and promises that we have received."

Other items available on the night include a print of Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de France, a football signed and delivered by Everton FC, an afternoon behind the scenes of Sgorio with the production crew, and a darts session with Mark Webster for up to four children.

10-year-old Ianto and eight-year-old Alys have also offered their car cleaning services to help raise money for the fundraising campaign.

In recent years the Eisteddfod has attracted 90,000 people and is expected to bring significant footfall to the town.
