The sale the former Abergele Slaters showroom is attracting "significant interest" from prospective buyers.

Manchester property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton have listed the Market Street base of the failed Nissan and Citroen dealership for sale, on behalf of administrators KPMG, with a price tag of £1million.

The family run car dealership, which was founded in Abergele in 1912, folded earlier this year with debts totalling nearly £3 million, including an overdraft with Barclays bank of £1.35 million. Two affiliated Slaters' Vauxhall dealerships continue to operate in Llangefni and Colwyn Bay.

A spokesperson for the joint administrators KPMG said: “A marketing process is ongoing for the disposal of the property, and to date there has been significant interest in this attractively located site.”

The two floor property, which occupies about 13,832 square feet and is situated on a 1.32 acre site near Tesco, offers a prospective freehold buyer or leasehold tenant a car service centre, showroom and office space on the first floor. There

Cllr Sam Rowlands of the Pentre Mawr ward, responded: "Obviously Slaters was such an important part of the town for a very long time and it’s a shame to see the company no longer continue in Abergele and especially the effects on former employees, but I wouldn't say the town is reeling - this is an opportunity for Abergele.

"The showroom space is perfect for a retailer move in and feed into the High Street - something Abergele is crying out for.

"Prestatyn is great example of how the High Street can be regenerated and thrive this way.

"There is also a lot of public space around the site and I’m excited to see what it is used for to further enhance the area and benefit the town and residents. It would be great for anyone with any ideas to voice them through the Abergele Place Plan.

"As for who I’d like to see take over the building – whatever or whoever the market wants is best for Abergele."
