Supermarkets staff from Rhyl and Prestatyn have joined forces to turn the tide on litter.

About 20 volunteers from Co-op stores in the towns met with the 3rd Prestatyn Scout Group to collect several sackfuls of litter left by day-trippers on Prestatyn promenade over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Co-op volunteers were inspired after a seeing the extent of littering over the last Bank Holiday weekend in May in the Journal.

Oliver Jones, manager of the Co-op food store in Ffordd Penrhwylfa, Prestatyn, said: “It was a great day, the sun shone and we were delighted with the results. The team were inspired by articles in the Journal about litter that had been left behind by day-trippers after a Bank Holiday weekend in May.

“Litter on the beach is not only unsightly, but creates a threat to marine wildlife too. As a community retailer the Co-op is committed to working at the heart of community life, and making a difference.

“We would like to say thank you to everyone who took part or helped to make the day a huge success, including the Scouts - who were fantastic - and the Astrobowl, Ffrith Beach and Denbighshire County Council who were incredibly helpful, providing the equipment needed and collecting the litter at the end of the day."
