A PETITION to curb motorists using Splash Point as a rat run has been launched.

The petition has already received 80 signatures from residents of the Rhyl estate, who are concerned that it's only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs due to increased traffic at peak times.

The residents are calling on the mayor of Rhyl, Win Mullen-James and the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones to introduce signage at entrances to Splash Point on Knowles Avenue, Carlisle Avenue and Molineaux Road, restricting speeds to 20 mph and entry to residents, visitors and delivery drivers from 8am until 8pm.

Steven Dyche, author of the petition and a resident of Knowles Avenue, said: "The issue is caused by motorists using the estate as a rat run during the school run and other busy times to avoid traffic lights coming from Prestatyn on the Coast road junction, which is incredibly congested and often experiences tailbacks during peak hours.

"The traffic through Splash Point is very dangerous especially with vulnerable people such as old folk crossing the road and children playing.

"Last year, a cat well loved in Splash Point called 'Ginge' was killed by a car driving at more than 50mph which didn't stop, and there have been a number other animals who have been ran over too. How long will it be before a child or elderly person is killed?"

Mr Dyche-Albane, a former Corporal in the RAF and borough councillor for East Staffordshire, will stand in the Bryn Heddyd ward by-election on Thursday, September 13 on behalf of the Democrats and Veterans Party.

The petition is expected to be delivered next week.
