As the opening of the new Conwy Culture Centre draws closer artist-led taster sessions are set to be held to give the public a feel for what the new site will be like.

The Conwy Culture Centre, adjacent to Bodlondeb, is set to open in the autumn of 2019 and will feature a new area library, archive, heritage hub, arts and community space, and a café.

In the lead-up to the opening of the centre, sessions are being held at a range of venues to introduce the county collections and give people the opportunity to get hands-on with arts and cultural activities.

So far, sessions have included making images from plastic as part of the RSPB Wellbeing week at Conwy Nature Reserve, learning about the discoveries at Kendrick’s Cave on the Great Orme, and using these objects as inspiration to create modern Prehistoric drawings.

More sessions are planned across the county over the coming months with various groups.

Culture centre project officer, Samantha Jones, said: “A big part of the Centre’s activities will focus upon providing opportunities for people to experience heritage through the arts.

“Our community engagement work so far has shown that people are most interested in learning about heritage by taking part in hands-on creative activities, so these sessions provide us with the perfect mix of experiences for participants. We hope lots of people will be able to benefit from the activities.

Cllr Dr Mark Baker, portfolio holder for communities and regulation, said: “These sessions are a fantastic way for groups that may not normally engage with heritage to have the chance to do that in a relaxed and informal way.

"There are many different ways for groups to get involved in traditional art sessions, poetry, pottery, and even writing computer codes.”
