A new structure to be installed on the Colwyn Bay promenade has been labelled "silly" by a former calligrapher.

Works are underway to install giant letters spelling COLWYN on the promenade near the new kiosk.

The proposed letters measure between 1.4 and 1.95metres (m) in width by 0.45m in depth by 2m in height and will span a distance of 17.5m.

The lettering is constructed from pre-cast concrete and is fixed to the ground.

However the structure, which was designed by Glyndwr University architecture student, Nichola Hilton - who came up with the idea for the kiosk design as well, has been labelled silly by Morris Greenwood, because of the lower case 'n' on the end of the structure.

Mr Greenwood said: "I can't see how they thought this up, it just looks silly to me.

"I don't mind the idea, all capitals would be ok but as far as I'm concerned it seems silly to have a lower case letter at the end."

Mr Greenwood used to teach calligraphy at College Llandrillo and has been a part of the arts department for 15 years.

These letters have been in planning since late 2016 and a report presented to the council said the feature would be a point of interest to this part of the promenade and would contribute towards the continuing regeneration of the promenade.
