THE first Get Newtown Moving event has been hailed a resounding success.
Newtown’s Town Hall grounds hosted the event, organised by Sport Powys and the Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations with the aim of increasing sport participation and highlighting other associations and groups in the town.
The town’s rugby, cycling, athletics, hockey and tennis clubs were among those who took turns in showcasing their sports to the community throughout the day with information stalls and a display ring a hive of activity.
Joint organiser Jonny Roberts from Sport Powys said initial feedback from clubs who attended had been positive.
“It was a successful day – all the stands were full and the event looked busy from the start.
“We’re still gathering feedback from the clubs, but those we’ve spoken to say they got a lot out of the day and for some of them that was new members and volunteers and for others it was just a chance to meet other clubs in the area and do some networking.
“We’ll wait and see, but if there’s the appetite for it from the clubs then we’d love to make it an annual thing. If they got enough out of the event we’ll do it again.”
