Ysgol Aberconwy

Ysgol Aberconwy students have achieved some of the best GCSE results in the school’s history. 

Year 11 pupils April Ehlke-West, Jack Jones, Charlotte Lewis, Bethan Slocombe, Isabelle Williams topped the achievers list all recording at least nine A/A* grades.

Headteacher, Ian Gerrard, praised the hard work of students and staff.

He said: “We are proud of the achievements of all of our students in a wide range of traditional academic subjects like science, Spanish and German, as well as in vocational subjects such as engineering, P.E., motor vehicle and hair dressing.

"It is so important that we provide a curriculum that meets the needs and interests of all.”

The number of students achieving five A*/ A grades nearly doubled and their performance in Welsh language exams was extremely strong.

Ysgol Aberconwy students are now looking forward to the next steps in their journey, with record-breaking numbers set to return to the school’s sixth form.

Ysgol Bryn Elian

Ysgol Bryn Elian has added to last week's successful A-level results with an outstanding set of GSCE scores. 

Students Emma Foster, Zacchaeus Hayward, Cassie Parry, Megan Jones, Sebastian Birchall, Josh Cleverley, India Curtis-Roberts and Owen Fordham topped the list of acheivers. 

All students are leaving year 11 with at least five GCSEs (A* to C grade).

Headteacher, Eithne Hughes, said the results were a testament to the hard work put in by the year 11 pupils. 

She said: “ Yet again the school has achieved results of a high standard, beating expectations in many areas. 

"We are very proud of all the young people who have worked so hard and tirelessly.

"We are very much looking forward to seeing them back in our successful sixth form in September.

"Bryn Elian’s success comes from offering our students a varied and appropriate curriculum, enhanced by our support systems in school and also our intensive mentoring package.

"Thanks go to all the staff for all their hard work and excellent teaching of these Year 11 students.

"The success of these students is because of the exceptional partnership we also have with parents and together the support provided at both home and school has enabled our students to shine.”

Students not only scored well in well-established subject areas but also in the new skills challenge certificate - a qualification which is rigorous and different to traditional GCSE.

Ysgol John Bright

A year 11 student's nine A*s has topped the list of GCSE achievers at Ysgol John Bright. 

Kayleigh Bonner recorded three A grades to go with her nine A* to lead an the extremely successful list. 

The top achievers list has doubled this year with nine other students achieving at least nine A*/A grades.

Headteacher Ann Webb said: "Our class of 2018 have matched the highest attainment of last year and we are extremely proud of their achievements.

"Changes to the grading system and examination specifications have
created a great deal of uncertainty and anxiety for young people.

"I am delighted that our students and staff have ensured continued success.

"Our students should feel delighted with their achievements and take confidence that their hard work, persistence and resilience, during a period of uncertainty with examinations, has delivered good results that will serve them well in the future.

"We are particularly pleased that our top students have almost doubled the achievements of previous years, a real testament to both their
hard work and the support given to them by the staff at school."

Hywel Parry, deputy headteacher, said: "The results they have achieved individually are great.

"As well as the hard work of the students, this is down to the excellent support offered by staff and by the students' families."

The school said it is lookoing forward to welcoming many of the students back as sixth formers when term begins in September.

St David's College

ST DAVID’S College, Llandudno, is celebrating success across the board with overall results recording A*- A and with A*- C grades above the national average. 

Headmaster, Andrew Russell, said: “I am overjoyed for our students receiving their level two qualifications, and in particular I am humbled by the hard work and dedication our staff has shown in guiding our students to achieving their goals.”

He added: “Our A*-C passes for all level two qualifications is an incredible 79% and significantly our English department is celebrating its 93% A*- C passes.” 

Very strong individual performances were achieved by Lois Lee, Henry Thompson, James Howie, Libby Emsley, Chloe Hunt and Jade Huntley.

Reflecting on his results, Henry Thomson, aged 16 said: “St David’s has given me a range of options not previously open to me and I am thrilled with the grade eight in English.”

Rydal Penrhos

Just a week after recording the best A-level results in the school's history Rydal Penrhos year 11 students have produced another set of outstanding results in their GCSE grades.

Among the individual successes was Ioan Peake-Jones, who recorded seven A*s, two 9’s, an 8, a 7 and a distinction in additional mathematics.

Other standout pupils included Millie Collins, who secured six A*s, four 8 marks and a distinction in additional mathematics, with Edward Patrick attaining six A*s, three 9’s and a distinction.

Others to achieve outstanding grades were Abhishek Bathula (five A*s, two 9’s, two 7’s, distinction), Tallulah Batley (four A*s, two 9s, two 7s, distinction), Eddie Farrell (five A*s, two 8s, A), Barooj Maqsood (four As, three 9s, 8, 7), Jamie Lavery (5A*, 8, 7, distinction), Arend Franssens (five A*s, A, 8, distinction) and Holly Battersby (four A*, A, two 7s, distinction).

The school said 33.9 per cent of all grades were A* (9 and 8), which is its highest on record and significantly higher than the national average of 23.3 per cent.

A total of 51.1 per cent of all final marks were A*-A (9-7); the second highest ever percentage at the school, and 28 of all entries scored a nine in accordance with the new grading system.

The number of pupils that achieved A*-C (9-4) grades was 94.4 per cent across the 15 subjects offered at GCSE.

Headmaster Simon Smith, said: “Such a set of results is a great credit to the pupils embracing our five Ls philosophy.

"It shows that whilst we must focus on Learning, in all its guises, all the other Ls: sport, the arts and an outstanding pastoral support can have a dramatic effect too.

“Academic performance is a culmination of factors and influences. It is also a credit to our academic leaders, the pupils' teachers and tutors; their professionalism, dedication and own commitment to professional development in researching the very best teaching practice.”

Ysgol y Creuddyn

A year 11 student has recorded 11A* grades to top an 'A star studded' line up of GCSE results at Ysgol y Creuddyn.

Mabli Roberts secured 11A* grades to top the achievers list at the school, which recorded exceptional results for a third year in a row. 

Elis Parry, Ellen Jones, Lowri Green, Bethan Davies and Mollie Sterriker-Ellis also succeeded to gain 11 A*/A grades.

Other top performers included Aron Gavins and Nel Williams, both secured 10A*/A grades; Kitty McCann, Ffion Roberts and Mathew Roberts all succeeded to gain 9A*/A grades and Lydia Hughes who secured 8 A*/A grades.

Headteacher, Trefor Jones, said: “It has been wonderful to see the look of joy on the faces of the young people as they’ve come in to collect their results today.

"We are extremely proud of all our pupils who have worked tirelessly to achieve excellent results and wish them the very best for the future.

Ysgol Eirias

Two sets of twins ay Ysgol Eirias have amassed a total of five A*s and 23 A grades between them as GCSE results were released this morning. 

Bethan and Emily Hanlon scooped four A*s, 16 As and four Bs between them whilst Daniel and Luke Benn gained one A*, seven As, 17 Bs and a C as well as an award for 100% attendance over five years. 

Other top performers included Ryan Turner (nine A*s, two As, one B, one C and a distinction), Ollie Gibson (nine A*s, one A, two Bs, one C and a distinction), Beth Tapping (eight A*s, four As, one B and a distinction), George Weis (eight A*s, three As, two Bs and distinction), Eleanor Jones (eight A*s, three As, one B), Isaac Wetton (seven A*s, five As, one B and a distinction), Jade Thomas (seven A*s, five As, one B and a distinction), Sophie Morley (seven A*s, one A, five Bs and a merit) and Aimee Butler (six A*s, four As and two Bs).

The strong GCSE results followed on from the highest A/A* grades last week for A level students at Eirias. 

All subject areas across school have proven to reach the high standards required enabling students to access the courses they need to continue their journey whether that be continuing in education or moving into the world of work. 

Headteacher, Mrs Sarah Sutton commented: “We are extremely proud here at Ysgol Eirias to see our students reap the rewards of their hard work. 

"This year group and the staff involved with them have worked extremely hard to reach their goals.  We look forward to continuing to support them in their next steps.”

A number of students have achieved success despite challenging personal circumstances or significant learning difficulties.

Individualised learning programmes and alternative curriculum provision have ensured that students can reach or exceed their potential through the varying routes offered.   

Of particular mention is Rebecca Ganley who has been involved with the GB Wheelchair Basketball Squad, as well as Iwan Davies and Hollie Williams.

All three students were presented with the David Lysak award for positivity in the face of adversity.

Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy

Two Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy pupils have recorded perfect scores in the GCSE results with all A* grades. 

lliw Ford gained 13 A*s, while Ethan Witt gained 11A*s to top an impressive list of high achievers at Dyffryn Conwy.   

Other top performers included Gwen Arfon – nine A*s, three As and a B; Isabel Walmsley – seven A*s and five As; Gruffudd Edwards – six A*s, six As and a B;  Angharad Butler five A*s and eight As; Alyia Abbasi and Tomos Land - four A*s, seven As and a B; Patrick Lynch – five A*s, three As, four Bs and a C; and Modlen Alun three A*s, six As, a B and three Cs.   

A further 10 pupils also gained at least 5A*/As or more this year.

Headteacher, Elan Davies, said: "I am thrilled at another strong year of results at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, especially in light of all the further changes to the GCSEs this year. 

"The results of our most able learners this year are particularly strong, demonstrating their hard work and commitment across their subjects. 

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our students on their results and wish them all the best in the future whether continuing in our sixth form, moving to college or to the world of work.

The school's successful subjects this year were art, music, drama and French where over half of pupils have gained the highest grades of A*/A. 

Although most of the school's students were on site to collect and celebrate their results other were far away from Llanrwst. 

One of these included Ethan Witt who is at his home in Africa where he studies for half the year.
