A PROUD mum celebrated her son’s “roaring” A level success by arriving at his school dressed as a inflatable dinosaur.

Alex Roberts, of Abergele, who not only secured a spot at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, but met and exceeded his target offer, joked that his mum Jacqui Roberts must have been a “comedian in another life” after she turned up at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan as the prehistoric reptile clutching a board painted ‘congrats to you Alex.’

Signed off with ‘love mum’, Alex, who gained 3A* and an A in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths, admitted he was surprised to see his mum in the costume but it wasn’t long before he was laughing!

He said: "When I was talking to mum about results day a few months ago, about how we would celebrate, I made the mistake of saying that there was nothing she could do to surprise me. Boy I was wrong.

"She had been planning this for a few months - I had no clue. It came as a somewhat hilarious surprise. She got staff to keep me distracted inside the school while she put it on around the corner out of sight.

"I was understandably surprised, I just started laughing immediately. I'm sure my mum was a comedian in another life.

"I think the feeling from friends and other pupils was just bewilderment."

When Alex got back home, the pair popped open a bottle of champagne to top off the celebrations.

Alex, who will be studying Natural Sciences, added: "Last year, during results day, I was in St John's College in Cambridge taking part in the Sutton Trust Summer School for a full week. It was quite frustrating not being able to pick up my results in person, so being able to this year was great.

"I honestly don't think I would have gotten this far without the Seren network. It's a scheme that runs talks and events throughout Wales to give high achieving learners from disadvantaged backgrounds support to apply to competitive universities. The support I received, along with outreach schemes such as the Sutton trust, Nuffield Research Projects and those run by Cambridge themselves were paramount in me getting this far.

"I'm looking forward to university and what awaits beyond.

"I'd like to do a PhD and go into research after I complete my degree, but I'm keeping my options open - things can quickly change."
