A NEW event aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyles is set to get under way in Newtown this weekend.

‘Get Newtown Moving’ is the idea of Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) and Sport Powys.

It will see parkland opposite the Oriel Davies Gallery turned into a hive of sport and leisure activity on Saturday, August 18.

The event will showcase a range of sports and will welcome visits from the town’s rugby, bowls, netball, walking, cycling and swimming clubs amongst others.

“Get Newtown Moving event will encourage the community to be more active in whatever way they are able,” said organiser Claire Powell.

“For some this means joining a local sports club, but for others it might mean joining a social or hobby group.

“We are lucky to live in such a vibrant community and this event will showcase what is available so that everyone can try something new.”

Sports day races and play activities for children such as rock painting, face paints, craft and soft play for under 5s will also be in full swing.

Organisers say coffee and cake will be available at the Befrienders Pop Up Cafe and are hoping for a good turnout at a lunchtime Picnic in the Park, where people can bring their own picnics or buy one on site.

The event gets under way between 10.30am and 3pm.
