A BIRTHDAY surprise for a volunteer raised funds for a hospital.

Penny Surridge, a volunteer at Whitchurch Community Hospital, had a surprise birthday party for 50 guests organised by her daughter Leanne Massey.

Instead of gifts the guests donated to the 'volunteer activities' and funds for Whitchurch Community Hospital.

Several items were purchased with the money raised, including musical instruments, some 'singalong' CDs, Famous Faces conversation cards, a reminiscence picture book and quiots game.

Mrs Surridge, of Thompson Drive, has volunteered at the hospital for three years and helped set up its memory corner for patients with dementia.

Of the day, she said: "It was lovely. I have a wonderful daughter, she is brilliant."

She was also delighted that the party helped raise funds for equipment to help patients during their stay at the hospital.

These items will used to entertain the patients whilst they stay in the hospital.

Anyone interested in joining the volunteers to do activities and crafts with the patients can contact Whitchurch Community Hospital on on 01948 509 223.
