RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,877 prime lambs to 251.4ppk / £102.00; 241 cull ewes and rams to £101.00 and cows to £1 per kilo.

Prime lambs:

There was a firmer trade in all weight categories on the week, with signs of early demand for tup lambs.

Top priced per kilo: 251.4 by Sue Davies, Englefield Farm; 235.0 by I P Jones, Maes Tyddyn; 232.1 by H L Griffiths, Ty Isa.

A SMALLER entry of lambs met with a firmer trade due to people finally having some grass!

Mold primestock sale - July 23

THERE were smaller entries in all classes due to the Royal Welsh Show.

The beef trade remained firm with less forward, while meated cattle commanded significant premiums.

Cull cows were back slightly, following the national trend.

Lambs bounced back and they averaged 1.92.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 77 store cattle to £1,210; 10 over-30 month cattle to £1,027; two breeding bulls to £2,760; four cows with calves to £1,380; 265 store lambs to £77; 75 breeding ewes to £107 and 76 rams to £630.

Store cattle:

Strong cattle was in good demand during the sale.

26m Aber Angus x to £1,130.00 by G Roberts, Pengwern Bach; 19m Aber Angus x to £1,000.00; 25m Limousin to £1,100.00; 32m Limousin to £990.00; 21m Brit Blue to £1,070.00; 24m Simmental x to £845.00.

Steers: 23m Brit Blue to £1,210.00 by M A Evans, Tan yr Accar; 22m Brit Blue to £1,180.00; 22m Charolais to £1,200.00; 21m Limousin to £1,180.00.

OTM: Limousin cows sold to £1,027.00.

Calves:

Simmental x bulls to £370.00 by E S Davies & Son, Mold; Brit Blue bulls to £340.00; Limousin bulls to £235.00; Simmental x heifers to £195.00.

Cows and calves:

72m Limousin cow with char x bull calf at foot to £1,380.

Breeding bulls:

A further two breeding bulls entered this week with very good recent demand. The first bull eventually sold for £2,760 by H Price, Cefn Naw Clawdd.

Also entered was an 18m Limousin bull selling for £1,995.

Ewes for early lamb production:

The entries of ewes this week were a brisker trade with prices topping at £107 for a pen of Texel full mouth ewes.

A pen of cross bred full mouth ewes sold for £94, followed by a pen of mule full mouth ewes at £80.

Store lambs:

An increased entry of lambs again were in very keen demand, with the highest price of the day being a pen of cross bred lambs selling for £77.

Texel x lambs to £63.50 and mules to £60.50.

There was a very brisk trade throughout with tup lambs especially in keen demand.

Rams:

There was an entry of 76 Texel and beltex x rams from David Faulkner.

There were plenty looking for the strongest rams, with the top price coming in at £630.

Spring lambs (2,375):

A SMALL entry met with a much firmer trade, with a big improvement on the week.

All types were very well sold, with ram lambs particularly dear.

A TOTAL of 1,757.5 acres of straw sold to an average of £107.76/acre.

968.5 acres of winter wheat straw to £158.82/acre, average £108.82/acre.

311 acres of winter oats straw to £162.50/acre, average £98.07/acre.

62.5 acres of spring oats straw to £100/acre, average £65.60/acre.

415.5 acres of winter barley straw to £147.36/acre, average £118.89/acre.

Mold stock sale - July 20

PLENTY of cattle were on offer again for buyers, with trade slightly harder due to the weather conditions.

Younger cattle seemed easier to sell compared to the previous week.

Dairy and calves were harder to place due to weather conditions affecting confidence.

Suckler cattle (6 entries): Lim cow (7yo) with LIM bull (4 months) calf 1550; WB cow (12yo) with Char hfr (3 weeks) calf to 980; WB cow (11yo) with Char bull (3 weeks) calf to 960.
