A Newtown mother and daughter will be putting on their walking boots to take on the Rotary Across Wales Challenge on Saturday to raise money in memory of a family member who was born with a life-limiting condition.

Llinos Hughes and her daughter, Ceri Davies, decided to tackle the gruelling 42-mile walk from the Dyfi estuary near Machynlleth to the Anchor, near Kerry on June 23 to remember Ceri’s late cousin, James Williams, who would have been celebrating his 18th birthday this month.

James and his family received support from Hope House children’s hospice up until his death at just two-months-old, so Llinos and Ceri have chosen the charity to benefit from the walk.

Llinos said: “To mark what would have been James’ 18th birthday, we are walking in his memory and hopefully raising a substantial figure for Hope House, our local children’s hospice, without whom many families would struggle to cope with a sick child.”

She also revealed that the Across Wales Challenge is on her list of 50 things to do before her 50th birthday next month.

What is the Rotary Across Wales Walk?
Fundraisers from all over the country take part in the annual ultramarathon walk.

It is an epic challenge of 42 miles which crosses Wales in a day on foot, to raise money for special causes.

Three Rotary Clubs from Mid Wales - Llanidloes, Newtown and Machynlleth - join forces every year to raise money for a chosen cause or charity.

This year, funds will go towards Kidney Wales.

More than £25,000 was raised by walkers for their chosen charities last year.
The Rotary donated £2,000 to last year’s chosen recipient, the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen near Oswestry.

Walkers set off early in the morning from the Gelli-Goch lay-by, just south of Machynlleth, then head to Staylittle, Llandinam, Devil’s Elbow and end the gruelling challenge just over the border into Shropshire at the Anchor.
