Two men were arrested, with another in hospital, after a high speed police chase across Powys ended with a smash in Newtown.

Dyfed Powys Police say the suspects threw power tools into the middle of the road in a desperate attempt to lose them in the pursuit, which began in Aberystwyth in the early hours of Tuesday, June 12.

Two men, an 18-year-old from Coventry and an 17-year-old from Tottenham, London, have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police officers and theft.

Police officers had attended an address in Aberystwyth just after midnight after receiving a report of power tools being stolen from a van, having also received reports of similar thefts from the Lampeter and Tregaron areas.

Officers identified suspects in the Southgate area of the town, but had to give chase after the men fled in a white Peugeot van.

Following a "high-speed" chase heading east, reports say the driver of the van lost control on the A489 Llanidloes Road as it approached the roundabout outside Newtown College, crashing into roadside fencing before ending up on it's side.

Three men were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash, but police say no members of the public or police officers were hurt during the pursuit, which involved road policing and response officers from both Ceredigion and Powys.

One man remains in police custody while another, the 17-year-old from Tottenham, has been released on bail. One other remains in hospital.

A statement from Dyfed Powys Police released on Wednesday, June 13 said: "Two males are in custody and one is in hospital following a high speed pursuit through Ceredigion and Powys in the early hours of June 12.
