ORGANISERS of Newtown Carnival said that they had the most “amazing day” for many years at this year’s extravaganza.

Winnie the Pooh made a guest appearance as the floats and walkers wound their way around the streets of Newtown before finishing at the Town Hall grounds, where everyone enjoyed a feast of entertainment put on by local musicians and dance groups.

Jen Reynolds of the organising committee said: “It was an absolutely amazing day, the best I’ve seen here for many years, the field was jam packed with people, we had 15 floats and 35 stalls at the field.

“I think the weather this year has helped although we did have a short shower and everyone had to run for cover for a bit.

“Having singers and dancers from Newtown entertaining the crowds does help people take an interest and keeps them here that bit longer.

“About a month ago I was worried that we had little interest in stalls for the field but it turned out fine and it picked up with people contacting us wanting pitches on the field, even late on the Friday night.

“We had people from far and wide even North Wales come over and we received lovely comments from a Captain Levington-Albright who said he’s never seen a carnival like it which is a nice thing to hear.”

The traditional duck race on Sunday had a twist, as the ducks stayed clear of the water.

This year, carnival queen Holly Jones donned a blindfold and was spun around several times before being set loose amongst the raft of ducks and choosing three.

Fundraising for next year’s carnival has already begun and a Race Night is being held at The Monty Club on Friday, June 15, starting at 7pm.
