BUSINESSWOMAN Jane Carroll has started her second term as Mayor of Bishops Castle after being re-elected at the town council’s annual meeting.

Abbie Naiad has also been re-elected as deputy mayor.

Arrangements were made for the Civic Sunday with a parade from the Town Hall at 10.30am on June 10, followed by the service at the parish church to be conducted by the mayor’s chaplain, the Rev Stephanie Fountain.

The council still has four vacancies to bring its numbers up the maximum of 12 and town clerk Gwilym Rippon said the council still welcomes approaches by residents interested in becoming a councillor with the council able to co-opt suitable applicants without the need for standing for a public election.

One of the council’s main activities currently is seeking to maintain the Public Hall for continued community use.

The council has spent £5,000 on refurbishments and is looking to invest another £5,000 to enhance facilities. A structural report confirmed the building is sound but a separate hearing system will have to be installed to reduce heating costs for the main hall and the underground music venue underneath.

Regular auctions held at the hall are proving popular but increased regular community use is needed to increase a revenue stream to cover maintenance work.
