Specialist firefighters were called out to tackle a fuel leak which brought rush hour traffic to a crawl.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call just before 8.20am on Monday morning reporting a fuel spillage from the fuel tank of a light goods vehicle (LGV) on the A494 westbound near Queensferry.

Three crews were sent to the scene – one regular crew each from Deeside and Wrexham – as well as an additional specialist crew from Wrexham.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service told the Leader 20 litres of diesel was confirmed to have leaked onto the highway and firefighters used an environmental pack, shovels and brushes to tackle the leak.

The incident was declared over just after 9.30am.

The Leader:

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, told the Leader: "Traffic started backing up by the Deeside Industrial Estate turn off.

"It was slow going and traffic was having to filter over to the right hand lane after the slip road.

"There was debris on the road, the central reservation was smashed up and a lorry was parked up on the left hand side. It was all coned off by the police.

The Leader:

"It looked like fuel was pouring out of the lorry and going down the road."

Commuters also faced congestion on the A55 Eastbound from junction 33B (Ewloe) to junction 33 (Flint/Mold).

The Welsh Ambulance Service was not called to the scene of the incident, a spokesman has confirmed.
