Rhayader Town 3 Welshpool Town 2

LYNDON Jones fired Rhayader Town to glory in the Llanidloes Town Welsh Beef and Beef Mid Wales Under 19s League Cup final.

Both sides began the final at Llanidloes Town’s Victoria Avenue brightly.

Welshpool broke the deadlock with Jack Weaver firing beyond goalkeeper Fin Duncan-McKane via the inside of the post.

Rhayader responded with a flurry of attacks and were rewarded when Lyndon Jones curled a looping shot over the Lilywhites goalkeeper.

Rhayader led for the first time soon after when a Jamie Evans and Lewis Pugh combined to set up Ollie Woods to lash home.

Welshpool started the second-half with more urgency and levelled through Callum Greatorex who steered home a superb headed effort following a corner.

With the fate of the silverware at stake both sides looked to take the initiative.

However it was the Red Kites who restored their lead with 20 minutes remaining with Jones latching onto a throughball from Aeron Powell to net.

Welshpool dominated the remainder of the game but Rhayader stood firm with several last ditch tackles and a series of outstanding saves from Duncan-McKane to be crowned league cup winners.

Rhayader Town chairman Graham Clarke praised the young Kites.

“The club are extremely proud of all the youth boys,” said Clarke.

Clarke hoped the side, comprising of locally based teenagers, would continue to develop and eventually progress to the senior team.

“We would love them to stay together to form the core of the first team,” said Clarke.

“Moving forward we believe they have the potential to get Rhayader competing at the highest level of football in Welsh football.

“This success is a a tribute to the current junior and senior set up the club has put in place over the last year.”

The Red Kites remain on course for more silverware after an 11-0 thrashing of Caersws booked a place in the final of the Central Wales Under 19s Cup last week.

Doubles from Lewis Pugh, Jamie Evans and Elliot Williams paved the way for an emphatic victory while Henry McCarthy, Ollie Woods, Aeron Powell, Kyle Morgan and Taylor Wozencraft completed the rout.

Rhayader take on Aberystwyth in the final with a date to be confirmed.
