A schoolgirl from Llanidloes has won three golds at the Welsh Schools’ Disability Gymnastics Championships.

Seven-year-old Lucy Beamond also won the highest overall points in the competition.

Proud mum, Leanne Davies, said: “It was her first ever competition and it’s given her a real confidence boost”.

Lucy, who has a condition that affects her muscles, hip dysplasia and a heart murmur, won gold in the floor presentation, vault and bench competitions at Plascrug Leisure Centre in Aberystwyth last Friday.

Lucy is a member of Maldwyn Dragons gymnastics club in Newtown and a pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon. They suggested she compete at the championships.

Leanne said: “Thanks go to Maldwyn Dragons and Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon for being very good and supportive with Lucy.”

“It was good to see boys and girls with the same disabilities as Lucy at the competition. Gymnastics helps strengthen her and she loves performing.”

“Someone came up to me at the competition and said she was setting a good example to the others and looked like she was really enjoying herself. She was always smiling.”

On Wednesday, Lucy competed in the Welsh finals in Bala.

“She’s excited and ready to go!”
