Malpas and Oswestry Chess Club
Oswestry A had a disappointing draw away to Telford A on Wednesday.
Oswestry, who are in second place in Division One of the Shropshire League, faced second-from-bottom Telford, however despite wins for Richard Bryant and Brian Whyte on Boards One and Three, a draw for Charles Lowick Higgie on two, and losses for Dave Bennion and Graham Ives on four and five, was the best they could do.
There was better news on Thursday when Malpas and Oswestry 2nds won 3.5-0.5 at home against Chester K at the Old School Tea Rooms.
Jonathan Smith, Stuart Hamilton and Andrew Williams won boards two, three and four respectively, while on board one Euan Stevenson was ill and David Thomas was brought in on the day. David was winning easily, but when the team went 3-0 up he kindly offered his young opponent a draw, which she initially refused, but soon accepted, to prevent a Chester white-wash.
