Following the sell-out success of a ‘Voices’ folk concert at Rhydycroesau Village Hall last September featuring five singers with local connections, there’s now another one in prospect on Saturday, March 17 (which happens to be St. Patrick’s night), but this time the focus is on instrumental music.

‘An Evening of Tunes’ includes Jock Tyldesley, Vera van Heeringen, Michelle Soinne, Phoebe Rees and John Neilson.

Llansilin-based fiddle and banjo maestro Jock Tyldesley and guitarist Vera van Heeringen are two of the finest exponents of American Old-Time playing you'll hear on either side of the Atlantic, but they play much more than that. Both were members of the hilarious New Rope String Band; Vera is an outstanding guitarist and will play some of her own solo tunes as heard on her two CDs to date, and Jock is sure to work his magic with anything he turns his hand to.

Michelle Soinne, from Gloucestershire, is a concertina player with an original take on traditional English and other music. An expert at finding strangely lyrical Morris dance tunes, she’s also written classics herself, heard in music sessions up and down the country, such as the famous The High Tea.

Originally from Oswestry, Phoebe Rees grew up in Scotland and it was in the North West Highlands where she began learning the fiddle. After going on to study as a classical viola player in Edinburgh and London, she is now living back in Oswestry. She is exploring a new sound by combining fiddle, viola and voice and getting back to her roots in Scottish and other traditional music.

John Neilson (accordion, piano, bouzouki) is also from Llansilin, and will play some of his own tunes and also accompany Michelle, with whom he played many years ago in the trio Firedogs.

Rhydycroesau Village Hall is a couple of miles west of Oswestry on the Llansilin road (B4580).

There’s no bar, so you’re asked to bring your own drink.

The concert starts at 8pm, with doors open at 7.30pm, and tickets cost £9 for adults, £5 per child.

Advance booking is advised, from Rowanthorn shop, Chapel Court, Oswestry or by phoning 01691 791403 or 01948 710218.
