A volunteer showcase event will be hosted by the Shropshire Archives team next Saturday (March 17).

The event between 10am and 1pm at their base at Castle Gates in Shrewsbury will highlight the work of their volunteers and also offer a rare chance to see behind the scenes at the archives which holds over six miles - or nine kilometres - of books, records maps and photographs which tell the story of Shropshire and its people over 1,000 years.

The event is also an opportunity to find out about the fascinating and varied projects carried out by volunteers at Shropshire Archives, which will be described in a series of short talks.

Visitors will also have the chance to see behind the scenes with volunteers demonstrating their skills and unique documents on show.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “This event is a great opportunity for people to see behind the scenes at Shropshire Archives. I’m positive that everyone attending will enjoy understanding the breadth of the work the volunteers do from archive and book cataloguing to highly technical digitisation and image manipulation.

“The volunteers who support the important work at Shropshire Archives are essential to its success, so I’m delighted to see their hard work and dedication being recognised.”

Tickets for the event are just £5 and include refreshments, however places are limited, to book a space please contact Pat Kiernan at patk1@blueyonder.co.uk
