JUST four years after starting a cake making business, Sam Francis has won an award at The Welsh National Wedding Awards ceremony.

Held at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, Sam who calls her business Sam’s Sweet Treats walked away with the award for best wedding cakes throughout Mid Wales, beating competition from the whole of Powys and Ceredigion.

She had been nominated for the award by happy customers over the past year and judges thought her tasty creations deserved the award.

Sam, from Tregynon, said: “I was honoured that my brides and grooms thought I deserved their vote.

“The awards ceremony itself is a fantastic event .

“When it came to reading out the winners in my category they called my name I was in total shock. I am beyond thrilled to have won.”

“I would like to thank all my amazing brides and grooms.”

“But special thanks has to go to my amazing husband, Antony family and friends for their continued support.”

Sam went on to explain that her cake making had started as a hobby.

She left her job at Newtown’s Oriel Davies to turn her hobby into a business.

Sam said: “I was at Oriel Davies for 14 years, I did make cakes for friends and family special occasions.

“While I was on maternity leave following the birth of my third son I wondered if I could make a go of it.”

“My husband Antony is a carpenter and transformed a room at home into a special kitchen for cake making and it’s been fantastic ever since.

“Usually it takes about three days to make the cake, sometimes five depending on how much decoration is needed.

“Businesses within the wedding community all help each other out, so a lot of the work comes through word of mouth.”
