NEWTOWN’S Shropshire Slam dreams ended with a 32 run defeat at Beacon on Thursday night.
Ally Laird and Dave Anthony celebrated early wickets only for Nick Bevan and David Howarth to form a 131 run third wicket partnership.
Laird (3-32) toasted the fall of Bevan, caught by Ryan Davies for 80 before Marcus Clayton was caught for a first ball duck by John Anthony, leaving Beacon 154-5.
Dave Anthony completed his 2-28 with the wicket of Jamie Martindale for 11, leaving Howarth (53no) and Beacon left to defend 170-5.
Opener Steve Davies led Newtown’s reply but Carl Williams (3-21) accounted for the rest of the top order.
Matty Cliffe (3-26) dislodged Davies for a top scoring 43 while also making inroads into the middle order before Clayton (2-22) and Jakob Woodhouse (2-30) ended Newtown’s challenge for 138.
