An initiative to get Builth Wells youngsters into cricket is receiving a great response, according to Cricket Wales area cricket manager Mark White.

The national body for cricket in Wales, Cricket Wales, are hosting a series of late afternoon summer workshops for children aged between 4-11 at Builth Wells Cricket Club in an effort to try and re-establish youth cricket at the Breconshire club.

Mark White, Area Cricket Manager for Cricket Wales said: “We've put on three sessions so far and it's growing fast - we only had two kids turn up to the first one but we were up to 16 by the third so there's been a great response to what we're doing and it’s growing all the time.

“Down the road at Brecon their junior section is absolutely thriving, they have over 100 children involved, so we know there's a huge appetite for cricket in Powys and we expect this to really take off.”

“We're arranging the sessions quite early on a Monday, at 4.30 til 5.30, so we can fit in with other sports in the area so we can offer as many sports as possible to children in the area. For example some of our children finish cricket in Builth then head off to do athletics in Brecon which is great as it means parents don't have to choose between sports and sacrifice one for the other.”

Builth Wells Cricket Club coach Paul Rowe, who leads the sessions, said: “We’re just trying to establish something here that hasn’t been going for a little while in this area. We’re trying to get young kids to come down and give it a go and just have some fun really.

“For most of them it’ll be their first experience with cricket or perhaps with any sort of organised sport so it’s all about getting them involved and letting them know the cricket club’s here, like the football and rugby clubs.”

Coaching sessions take place at Builth Wells Cricket Club, Garth Road, each Monday from 4.30pm. More information is available from Paul Rowe on  07513 164113, or from @BuilthWellsCC on Twitter and Facebook.
