THE streets of Llanfair Caereinion were bathed in sunshine on Saturday as hundreds turned out to enjoy the carnival.

After admiring the floats and fancy dress costumes, there was fun for all the family on offer with stalls, contests and food available throughout the afternoon.

“Another glorious day for Llanfair Caereinion Carnival, we had eight absolutely fantastic floats and amazing fancy dress costumes,” said Sam Webster, chair of the carnival committee.

“There was no theme this year, so it was ‘Anything Goes’ and it was anything goes, what an array of themes we had!

“Rhian Burns our Carnival Queen had a beautiful, bright, colourful float with her attendants who were Eifion Humphreys, Andrew Davies, Richie Ryder, William Price, Rhiannon Clarke, Ava Andrew, Mair Conklin and Evie Cochran.

“They arrived into town by carriage on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, a massive thank you to them for helping us to continue with this tradition.”

The parade was led by Newtown and District Automobile Club with their classic and modern range of rally cars, followed by fancy dressed children, adults, decorated prams and Newtown Silver Band.

The Carnival Queen’s float was followed by seven others – Builders and Strutters, Ogre the Gibbet, Flower Power, Disneyland, Llanfair’s Golden Ticket (Willy Wonka), Trolls and Black Watch.

Siony Rudd, from Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn, and Catrin Davies, from Ysgol Maesydre, judged the fancy dress competition at the Institute.

They said: “A huge effort by all, the costumes were absolutely amazing.”

The floats were judged by Nick Jones and Jean Vavere from Myrick Training Services, who were challenged with picking the winners from the superb entries, while the Best Individual Entertainer Shield was judged by the carnival’s secret judges.

“The carnival committee would like to thank our local performers, it is great to see so much talent on our doorstep,” said Sam.

The crowds were treated to performances by Bethan Smith with Powys Dance and several dance groups, Llanfair Caereinion Primary School Disco Dance Group, Manon and Mared, Caereinion Gymnastics Club, Gemma Astley, Ffion Evans and Donna Cruse.

Among the shows in the main ring were Dangerous Steve and Newtown Silver Band, while visitors were kept busy with the popular fun fair, Nerf Wars, bouncy castles, face painting, Kids’ Corner and various stalls.

Refreshments were provided by Rita Walters, Banwy Café, Kevin Jones Butchers and High Spirits Mobile Bar.

Sam added: “It was an extremely hot day, which always helps to bring the crowds in – we had a fantastic attendance and a great carnival.

“It is a great community and it is great when everyone comes together.”

The carnival committee also thanked Deri Dental Practice, HV Bowen and Sons, Wynnstay Stores, Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, Mid Wales Stoves, Neuadd Bridge, Pandy Butchers, AJ’s Hair Salon, RG Peate Funeral Directors, Just3Drops, Black Lion, Plas Cath Luxury Cattery, Trefaldwyn Vets and all those who helped out on the day.
