Builth Wells 17

Bonymaen 15

NICK Howells backed Builth Wells to bounce back from relegation after signing off his reign with a shock victory over league leaders Bonymaen.

The outgoing coach praised his side and insisted new incumbents Ben Duggan and Gethin Davies were the right men to bring the Bulls back up next season.

“It was a great way to end the season,” said Howells. “The lads showed they are capable of competing at this level by beating the best team in the division.

“Obviously we have been relegated but the lads will all be better for their experiences this season and Ben and Gethin are the right men to bring the club back up.”

The Bulls started with confidence and it was no surprise when Tom Samuel released Ashley Mills to cross for the opening try, converted by Seb Barrett.

Bonymaen hit back before the break with an unconverted try fry from Ian Brooks reducing the arrears to two points.

However Builth pulled away after the break with Gavin Jones feeding Ben Pugh to storm the whitewash for a try, converted by the reliable Rob Lloyd.

Aled Bullock would reduce the arrears with a second unconverted try for Bonymaen but a drop goal from Lloyd would provide the Bulls with breathing space.

Nick Clancy crossed for a third unconverted try to reduce the arrears to two points as Builth were forced to play 10 minutes extra time before a morale boosting end of season victory could be celebrated.
