GREGGS, the chain bakery has announced it will be opening a store in Radnorshire.

After submitting a planning application for new signage and structural design to the store front it has been revealed that the bakery will be at Bakehouse, Station Crescent, opposite the Post Office.

The company is also advertising job vacancies at the same address, searchable at www.greggsfamily.co.uk

Confirming its intentions of bringing a shop to the town, a Greggs spokesman said: “We are delighted to be opening a new shop in Llandrindod. This new shop opening is part of our ongoing programme to reshape our estate.”

The initial application was made in September by an agency on behalf of Greggs, which is still in the process of being completed.

The application has yet to be approved by Llandrindod Wells Town council and Powys County Council’s planning department, so an official opening date cannot be given.

This news comes after another recent opening of a Greggs in Newton, Montgomeryshire.

Sue Green of the Chamber of Trade in Llandrindod Wells is pleased to hear that the chain may be coming, bringing development and competition.

She said: “That’s the nature of business, competition. To see the town thriving is what we want, and with this will come the development of a run down building.

“Competition raises everyone’s game. A lot of the businesses here are small, but from the people I have spoken to I know that we’ve had a great summer and there is a lot of business to be had in the area.

“Personally I’d be delighted to see a Greggs come to the town.”

Town Councillor, Chris Carmichael added: “I’m a bit torn as it is a dilapidated building that will be good to see renovated. My concern is pressure on cafes in the area.

“On the whole, it seems like a good thing, but is that going to have an effect on companies already in the town. It could be positive.

It’s a well known, ethical company and it will be a good looking store front. But we will have to see what effect it has.”
