Penrhyncoch 2
Porthmadog 1
JONNY Evans proved the hero as Penrhyncoch secured their Huws Gray Alliance with a deserved home win over Porthmadog.
The Roosters went into the game knowing victory would finally end their relegation fears and matched their North Wales guests from the start.
Jon Foligno headed a Mark Gornall corner over the bar with the defender also firing straight at goalkeeper Richard Harvey as Penrhyn dominated.
The inevitable breakthrough arrived on 36 minutes when Gornall’s deep free-kick into the area was lashed home by Dafydd Carruthers.
Gornall continued to stretch Porthmadog with another free-kick met by Liam Doherty to test Harvey.
Porthmadog’s afternoon worsened when Dan Roberts earned a second caution and marching orders just before half-time.
However the 10 men bossed the start of the second-half with Ceri James firing inches wide from distance before home goalkeeper Lee Jenkins denied Julian Williams.
Porthmadog levelled on 70 minutes when a long throw from Iddon Price was turned past Jenkins from close range by Meilir Williams.
Penrhyn hit back almost immediately when Evans’s shot from the edge of the area was fumbled by Harvey before dipping into the net.
Porthmadog piled forward in search of an equaliser with Cai Jones, Julian Williams and Craig Papirnyk going close but the Roosters dug deep to claim victory and secure another season of tier two football.
