Holyhead Hotspur 3
Penrhyncoch 1
PENRHYNCOCH’S week from hell ended in defeat at Holyhead and a cruel blow as Sion Meredith was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.
Having been docked three points for fielding an ineligible player in the build-up to the match the depleted Roosters were desperate for the points in Anglesey.
Penrhyn dominated the first-half with Dafydd Carruthers and Jonny Evans going close and Mark Gornall's cross cleared off his own line by home defender Kieran Hilditch before the pressure finally told when Evans cut inside to fire the Mid Wales side ahead on the stroke of half-time.
Spurs put Penrhyn under pressure at the start of the second-half with Mel McGuiness forcing goalkeeper Lee Jenkins into action while Kenleigh Owen skimmed the bar from distance.
The turning point in the game proved to be Meredith’s injury with the veteran suffering a broken arm with seven minutes remaining.
Following a lengthy delay and resumption of play the hosts levelled as McGuiness pounced from close range before Owen headed Spurs ahead after Alex Jones’ shot came back off the bar.
Penrhyn’s misery was compounded deep into injury-time when substitute Martin McClymont burst through to fire home and leave the Mid Wales side staring relegation in the face.
PENRHYNCOCH: Jenkins, Foligno, S James, O James, E Evans, Gornall, Corbisiero, Meredith, Shaw, J Evans, Carruthers. Subs: Mansell, Lemon.
