NEWTOWN welcome Llandudno to Latham Park on Sunday (3pm) in one of the biggest games of the season.

With both sides scrapping it out for seventh spot even the S4C cameras, which have failed to screen a live game at Latham Park this season, will descend on the Mid Wales venue on Sunday.

The Robins have been the form side of 2017 with their record since the turn of the year even outshining runaway league champions TNS.

Jason Oswell has taken the headlines after his hat-trick at a sorry Aberystwyth Town last week inspired a 4-0 victory and fired him to the top of the league scoring charts.

However manager Chris Hughes insisted the Robins revival had been based on its defence.

“We showed against Aberystwyth what a team playing with confidence can do,” said Hughes. “We were exceptional and played some great attacking football on the night.

“A few of our goals were well worked team goals and Jason deserves a lot of credit for his hat-trick and run of goals since the turn of year as he is a huge player for us.

“However our attacking players have been given the confidence to play in the way they have by our defence which has been outstanding since the league split.

“Scoring goals and winning games are as important as clean sheets and you could see our lads were determined, even at 4-0, not to give Aber a goal.”

Llandudno arrive at Latham Park in eighth spot having bolstered their ranks with the loan signing of winger Robbie Parry from TNS this week.

“As soon as we finished the Aberystwyth game we began to focus our attention on Llandudno, it is a massive game for both clubs but one we are greatly looking forward to.”

Newtown will enter the convoluted end of season play-off should they secure seventh spot, playing the sixth place finisher over two legs and, should they prevail, the fourth placed finisher in a two legged semi-final.

Should the Robins navigate the two games they would then play the winners of the semi-final between the third and fifth placed finishers.

Hughes insisted the Robins would not be planning for the play-offs until after their top flight status was secured.

“It's the main priority every season and a win against Llandudno this week would go a long way to ensuring we no longer have to look over our shoulders,”
