NEWTOWN manager Chris Hughes has reminded his players last week’s heroics against TNS will count for nothing in the forthcoming relegation battle.

The Robins struck twice in the last eight minutes to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw which ended the runaway leaders record breaking 100 per cent start to the season.

While delighted with the result and performance against the champions elect the Robins manager was left to rue his side’s failings over the previous 21 games.

“We showed great spirit, and deserved at least a point,” said Hughes. “Praise goes to Dave Jones too, he had to make some important saves which he has done all season, and the strike from Jamie Price showed his quality.”

“It is frustrating that we haven’t showed that performance throughout the season because if we had done we wouldn’t be where we are,” said Hughes. “We are still second bottom, after a point against the best team in the league by mile.

“It was as great comeback with two goals in the last eight minutes and we need to take momentum from this.”

While Nicky Rushton and Joe Kenton made their debuts, on-loan midfielder Joe Newton has departed Latham Park to return to Vanarama Conference side Wrexham.

Hughes hopes to further strengthen before the end of the January transfer window with several targets identified.

“We’ve brought in a couple and it has pepped us up, Nicky showed what he is about and that is what we have needed,” said Hughes who now faces 10 crucial games to keep Newtown in the league.
