ASSEMBLY candidate Russell George welcomed Welsh Conservative Leader Andrew RT Davies to Newtown this week as he steps up his election campaign.

Mr Davies was in Llanbister recently to back Gary Price’s campaign to become Brecon and Radnorshire AM and he was at Newtown Market Hall on Tuesday to meet market traders and back Mr George’s campaign.

He met with Graham Winchester, director of Mid Wales Food and Land Trust, and chairman John Evans, as well as sampling food in the hall’s cafe.

Mr George was delighted to welcome the leader to Newtown, and discussed the proposal for a ‘Mid Wales minister’ to fight the area’s corner in Cardiff.

He said: “I was pleased to take him (Andrew RT Davies) to Newtown market hall.

“It is a good example of regeneration and it was good to meet volunteers and a number of local business owners.

“Andrew took the time to come to Newtown to speak to people which is very pleasing.

“I think that Mid Wales is of major importance to Wales and in our manifesto we are proposing to introduce a minister for Mid Wales so that there is someone to fight Mid Wales’ corner. This is because we believe that the Welsh Government is neglecting the area.”
