MORE than 200,000 people are expected to turn out at this week’s Royal Welsh Show.

But what attracts so many people to the four-day event in Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells, which this year runs from July 23-26?

A spokesperson for the Royal Welsh Show said: “People go to the show from across the UK and from countries around the globe to see Britain's finest livestock, including spectacular displays of Welsh native ponies and cobs, to view the largest exhibition of sheep breeds anywhere in the world or to watch glossy-coated animals and their white-coated handlers compete for the thrill of winning a coveted Royal Welsh championship award.

“Thousands also enjoy the non-stop entertainment in the showground's main ring, sample the delights of the Food Hall, see the brilliant floral exhibits in the horticultural pavilion, browse along the shopping avenues, take in the displays of farm machinery, participate in outdoor and country pursuits, stroll through the forestry and environment areas, indulge in the myriad of interests to be found around almost every corner of the showground, or just relax and listen to the music which is everywhere.

“All these attractions, and many more, draw crowds to the Royal Welsh, but there are other characteristics too which make this four-day event unique.

“A spirit of goodwill and a warm family feeling permeates the show. It is a sensation that has been created by the visitors themselves, from both rural and urban backgrounds, who have forged friendships on the showground between individuals and families that last a lifetime.

“If you have not yet visited the show a warm welcome awaits you at Llanelwedd. Come and see for yourself and enjoy the experience.”

Brecknockshire is the show’s Feature County for 2012 and Powys County Council has organised a busy programme of activities.

Cllr David Jones, Powys County Council’s Leader, said: “We are looking forward to an excellent show. We are proud to have such a prestigious event on our doorstep and Brecknockshire being Feature County is an additional opportunity for us.

“Our activities are centred around promoting the area as the Green Heart of Wales and we extend a warm welcome to everyone attending. Visitors to our stand will be able see for themselves what a special place Brecknockshire and Powys is.”
