A DENBIGH woman is celebrating after being made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Janie Smith, 76, who lives at Gwaenynog Hall on the outskirts of the town, received the honour for her services to local politics and voluntary services.
Nantglyn born, she joined the Conservative party when she was 19 and has been involved in politics ever since, chairing the Arfon constituency party and North Wales area party.
Mrs Smith was overjoyed with her award.
She said: “I found out at least six weeks ago, I was absolutely delighted.
“I felt very honoured to receive it.
“I have been involved with the Conservative Party since I was 19 and I have been chairwoman of the Vale of Clwyd Conservatives twice, then I was also chair of the Arfon constituency and the North Wales area constituency.
“I loved going to Arfon, they are wonderful people there.”
Mrs Smith was congratulated by Vale of Clwyd MP James Davies.
He said: “This is a thoroughly deserved award which recognises Janie's lengthy and steadfast commitment to the local community in Denbigh and beyond.”
