PERFORMING Arts students from Shrewsbury College will be taking their performance of cult classic, Little Shop of Horrors on the road to Theatre Severn this week.

The students who performed the show at the colleges theatre at the London Road campus last month to sell-out audiences, took their props, including the giant plant Audrey 2, to Shrewsbury Square to perform ‘flash mob’ scenes from their play ahead of the shows at Theatre Severn.

The story of Little Shop of Horrors, which is best known as the 1986 black-comedy film version, directed by Frank Oz and starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin, is an adaptation of the off-Broadway musical composed by Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman.

It tells the tale of a nerdy florist shop-worker who raises a vicious, raunchy plant that feeds on human blood.

The year one and two, Level 3 students spent a week performing their version of the play to the public at Shrewsbury College’s Performing Arts theatre, ahead of their performances at Theatre Severn.

Michael Jenkins, performing arts lecturer, said: “The show is packed full of comedy and romance which is guided by a superb score and stylish writing.
“I’m extremely proud of all of the students who have worked exceptionally hard this last week and the response we’ve had from the public has been extremely positive and encouraging.

“We think it’s important the students get a taste of working in the industry, and putting on a full production at Theatre Severn is a great way for them to gain valuable experience, and to perform in front of a larger audience.

“We would like to encourage the general public to come along next month and witness the spectacle that will be on offer.”

Performances will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at 7.30pm and Thursday, June 12 at 12.15pm and 7.30pm.
