A ROCK star and his wife who have both battled cancer are set to embark on a 130-mile trek for charity.

Mike Peters, frontman of rock band The Alarm, and wife Jules will set off from Flint Castle this month to raise funds for cancer services in the region.

The prolific fundraisers, from Dyserth, have both endured their own cancer battles and have helped raise thousands for local services in the past.

On their latest money-raiser, the pair will set off from the castle on June 15 walking to Broughton, Wrexham and then west toward Snowdon.

The walk has been organised as part of the ‘By Your Side’ cancer care campaign, set up by the pair alongside Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board charity ‘Awyr Las’ in 2014.

Mike said: “When I launched the By Your Side cancer care campaign with our North Wales NHS charity, Awyr Las, two years ago I was a man on a mission. I wanted to help others like me get the very best quality treatment and care right here in North Wales.

“I hoped to encourage people to keep active and I aimed to celebrate all that is great about our NHS.

“What better way to raise money and help spread the important message of leading a healthy, active life than to get out there and enjoy the absolutely stunning scenery we have in this part of the world?

“We’re bound to have sore feet by the end of the 10 days but we’re going to have a fantastic time.”

Mike, who has been living with leukeaemia for over 10 years, having previously gone into remission after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, has been cared for by the NHS in North Wales for more than 20 years.

He still takes medication daily and receives additional treatment every two months on the Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump when taking part in a TV documentary.

She had to endure multiple bouts of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to battle the disease.

Mike said: “Over these past two years a lot has changed.

“We’ve had a lot of fun and done a lot of fundraising. Through the campaign we’ve collectively raised over £275,000, making very real improvements to the support, treatment and care that people with cancer in North Wales receive in our hospitals and in our communities.”

He added: “We know there are 351,120 steps from Wrexham Maelor Hospital, to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and on to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

“We want to raise £1 for each step and we really hope that people across North Wales will help us get over the finishing line and smash our £351,120 target.”

The first leg of the 10-day walk will start at Flint Castle, finishing 10 miles later at the Chocks Away Cafe in Broughton.

The second day route will travel a 13.5 mile route through Wrexham and end at a community event at The Racecourse.

The walk will then head west, finishing at Caernarfon Castle on June 23.

The campaign will culminate with the annual trek to the summit of Snowdon and the Snowdon Rocks weekend of music and celebrations in Llanberis on June 24 and 25.

Mike added: “We are stronger and more determined than ever.

“We both still know we’ve a lot to be thankful for and our mission remains the same.

“We want to help, we want to inspire hope, and we want to celebrate.

“That’s why we’re going on this spectacular walk as part of our overall By Your Side fundraising activities.

“We’ll be raising money, we’ll be singing, we’ll be remembering friends who’ve gone and we’ll be having a good time.”
