A drug driver has admitted causing the death of a man who had only recently become a father.

Lee Bennison, 33, was killed when he was hit by a car as he rode his motorcycle between Mold and Pontblyddin on the A541 Wrexham Road in September.

The car driver, Paul Mayor, 45, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Friday and admitted causing his death by careless driving, when the level of a metabolite of cocaine in his blood was over the prescribed limit.

Mayor, of Torrington Drive in Knowsley, Merseyside, was rebailed pending sentence on June 22.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said he had pleaded guilty to what was a very serious matter.

“There can only be one sentence in my judgement for this sort of offence. You must be prepared for that,” he said.

Custody was almost inevitable but he would get full credit in sentence for his guilty plea.

An interim driving ban was imposed.

The judge granted an application by Damon Sabino, defending, for a pre-sentence report.

Family of the late Mr Bennison were present for the hearing and the judge asked that enquiries be made with them to ensure that the date for the sentencing hearing was convenient for them.

Mr Bennison, formerly of Rhyl, lived at Bronallt in Leeswood near Mold.

He and his partner Delyth had a baby son Osian.

A statement released by Mr Bennison’s family at the time of the tragedy said: “Lee was a talented furniture-maker who worked hard to support and look after his family.

“Tragically taken from us at such a young age, his whole family are devastated by the loss of Lee. Life will never be the same without him.”

The collision happened as Mr Bennison rode his motorcycle from Mold towards Wrexham on September 5.
