A NEIL MITCHELL wondergoal ended Rhyl's hopes of a top six finish as they were defeated 1-0 in a game that ended in controversial fashion.
It was open early on as Luke Boundford volleyed over from an early corner, before Ashley Stott troubled the Robins back four.
He cut inside Gavin Cadwallader, with Dave Jones coming out to blocked, before Cadwallader blocked the second effort from Tom Rowlands.
Rowlands again then had a volley blocked as both himself and Stott were looking lively going forward for Rhyl.
Sean Evans then played a superb reverse pass for Boundford who sliced his shot wide, before Neil Mitchell scored arguably the goal of the season to give the hosts the lead.
Matt Hearsey found the forward out wide, and he cut inside and unleashed a thunderous shot into the top corner leaving Alex Ramsay with no chance.
It was the Robins who had their tails up as Jason Oswell forced Ramsay into a mistake as he blocked the goalkeepers kick, but the ball deflected away from goal, before Mitchell crossed for Hearsey but the winger headed over from yards out.
It was the hosts who were having the better efforts, as the Lilywhites were struggling to create chances, however Rowlands dug out a shot late in the half, and Rob Hughes fired just over for the visitors first real chance.
The visitors came out stronger as Rowlands had a shot saved, and Ryan Astles headed over.
Michael Walsh then came within a whisker of levelling it as he cracked the bar from a Stott pass.
Newtown were creating very little as Greg Strong's men looked more likely to score as Jamie Brewerton headed wide, but with five minutes to go against the run of play the hosts should have finished it.
Jamie Price tried to slide a ball across the box to Hearsey, but it was blocked on the slide by Astles with his arm, and the referee pointed to the spot.
However Ramsay saved Craig Williams' spot kick to keep the game alive.
And it was an all action finish to the game as Jack Kenny had a penalty shout waved away as he tangled with Shane Sutton in the box, and then in the dying embers of the game, the officials were at the centre of controversy again.
Rowlands free kick was flicked on by Greg Stones and Brewerton flicked the ball home, but the linesman had his flag up for offside.
The result means Rhyl will spend the second half in the bottom six, and Newtown are still fighting to secure that final sixth spot.
