A FORMER Llanidloes High School pupil played a leading role in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Tom Needham, 21, of Llandinam, played drums in the industrial revolution scene, which was watched by more than 27 million UK viewers.

Tom volunteered for the role after spotting an advert at The Institute for Contemporary Music Performance in London, where he studies, and has since described the moment as one of the greatest moments of his life.

He said: “It was incredible to be there playing live during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“It was such an amazing experience and will go down as one of the greatest days of my life.

“In the stadium everybody was standing up and dancing and getting really involved which was brilliant to see.

"The best part of the experience was being able to get free tickets to the dress rehearsal for my parents, that was the best feeling in the world.

“It was the biggest gig I have had so far in my career.”

Tom, who attended Llandinam Primary School before moving to Llanidloes High School, has previously played with multiple bands and artists and has focused on becoming as diverse drummer as possible.

He has played with bands such as North Powys Youth Band, where he was the principal percussionist, North Powys Youth Orchestra, North Powys Youth Jazz and Openscore Jazz band.
He has also marched for Llanidloes Silver Band and Newtown Silver Band.
