BANGOR City travel to Llanelli full of confidence this weekend, after they got their Welsh Premier league campaign back on track with a deserved victory against Prestatyn Town.
Nev Powell’s side face two vital away encounters in two weeks, as they look to strenghthen their position at the summit of the Welsh Premier league.
The first of these sees them face full-time Llanelli on Saturday before they make the shorter trip down to Bala the following weekend, and Powell is not underestimating the size of the task facing his table-topping side.
He said: “We’ve got two tough away games coming up now, Llanelli and Bala away from home. That will be a test for us.”
“We’ve got nine cup finals to go, but we’ll prepare this week, and go to Llanelli hopeful we can get a result.”
Powell spoke after his side overcame the challenge of Prestatyn Town by two goals to one, and he reserved special praise for match-winner Les Davies.
He said: “ Les was unplayable today. He’s playing the best football of his career and he deserved to be named man of the match, and deserved his goal.
“But saying that, there’s ten other players who aren’t far behind him. They’re all playing with a lot of confidence, a lot of heart, and it’s a great start to the Nantporth chapter, and hopefully we can keep it going now.”
On a wet and windy day at Nantporth, the pitch managed to pass a late inspection and the game got underway.
Neither side took immediate control, and after Bangor tested ‘keeper Jon Hill-Dunt twice early on, Michael Parker nearly put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes, when the ball looped inches wide of the post after his one-on-one attempt was initially thwarted by Lee Idzi.
From the resulting corner, the ball was cleared only as far as player-manager Neil Gibson, and he calmly dispatched a half volley into the bottom corner to open the scoring.
This seemed to spark City into life, and they nearly grabbed an eqaualiser when Jamie Brewerton put his half-volleyed effort narrowly wide.
Les Davies then had a shot deflected after a marauding run, before he had a strong penalty shout turned down after a clumsy challenge by Prestatyn’s Gareth Wilson.
The hosts hit back on 37 minutes, when Kyle Wilson converted a Chris Roberts cross following an eye-catching passage of play from Bangor.
The second half began with the hosts in the ascendancy, and Wilson should have put his side ahead on 50 minutes, but saw his lob drift wide of the target.
Three minutes later Town won a free-kick just outside the hosts’ box, and Ross Stephens saw his curled left-footed effort fall inches over the bar.
City looked dominant in possession, and they got they went ahead on 56 minutes, when Les Davies produced a crisp low finish that beat substitute ‘keeper Dave Roberts.
The Citizens looked to finish the game off, but they found Roberts in great form as he denied several attempts from Chris Jones, Dave Morley and goalscorer Davies.
Prestatyn had a golden chance to snatch a point in the dying seconds, but Ross Stephens could only steer his shot high over the crossbar.
